Chapter Sixteen
With the temperature in Phoenix hovering around one hundred and five degrees, one could do little outside but laze around the pool, so Scott and Holly played on their senior status, letting the youngsters deal with business. Jim was in the office sifting through e-mails, Ilse was preparing dinner, and when the phone rang, it was Poppy, checking on the progress of her new house sitter. She and Ilse hadn’t spoken before, but as Holly walked into the kitchen to refresh drinks, the two were chatting like old friends. Ilse said her goodbyes and handed Holly the phone.
“Aah,” said Poppy with a familiar sigh, “she sounds delightful, so young, so European.”
Holly giggled. “And she can cook.”
“Oh my heaven, hasn’t one striven a lifetime to find a decent cook.”
“Cool it, sister,” smirked Holly. “It’s been a long time since either of us had servants.”
“I know, but don’t you wish for those decadent times every now and again?”
“No, too many bad memories. Are you coming home soon?”
“Why would you want an old broad like me around? It sounds like the new girl is a distinct asset to your life. Must have gobs of young bucks flocking round, and at least one of them must have an eligible father you can charm the pants off.”
“You’re incorrigible; she’s strictly here to watch your house and occasionally cook for us. You have to taste her Wildpastete — deelish. She serves it with a warm tossed salad. Heaven on a plate.”
“She’s German, then.”
“Didn’t I mention that before?”
“No, not that it matters. What does matter is you. Thought you were staying in Prescott Valley with your new amour. Didn’t that work out?”
“Things change,” Holly’s tone was defensive.
“Want to talk about it?”
“Not now.”
“So … ” Poppy made an abrupt switch, “How’s the young thing getting on with you-know-who?”
“Jim?”
“Of course, Jim, he’s my favorite nephew, and I worry about him. Wouldn’t want him falling in with the wrong sort. Damn, if he wasn’t blood, I’d — ”
“Poppy, please, I haven’t had my second cocktail yet, and I’m not sure I’m brave enough for one of your lurid dissertations sober.”
“They are merely teaching opportunities — ”
“For you or me?”
“Both, my dear, most definitely both. Now tell me, has he made a move on her yet?”
“Yet? I believe moves were made the first night they met.”
“Oh, to be young and in full possession of one’s muscle tone … He’s a real catch, don’t you think?”
“I do, and so does she. He’s made quite an impression on her.”
Poppy sighed again. “That’s his style, although women never occupy his interest for long. His job has always been the most important thing in his life. Don’t mean to be catty, but she’ll be yesterday’s news in a couple of weeks.”
“We’ll see about that. Right now they’re getting along like a house on fire.”
“It’s sort of satisfying; someone is actually having sex at my house.
